Meet Stavros Anthony

Stavros Anthony was elected to serve as Nevada’s 37th Lieutenant Governor in November of 2022, becoming the only Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the country to defeat a sitting incumbent Democrat during that election cycle. He currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Republican Lieutenant Governors Association and previously served as the group’s Finance Chairman.


As Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor, Stavros Anthony serves as the President of the Senate, Chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, Chairman of the Outdoor Recreation Advisory Board, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Transportation. He also serves as a member of the Board of Economic Development and the Executive Branch Audit Committee. 

In January of 2025, Stavros created the Lieutenant Governor’s Task Force to Protect Women’s Sports, which has made significant strides in protecting female athletes and providing fairness in sporting competitions at both the high school and collegiate levels. 

 

Prior to being elected Lieutenant Governor in 2022, Stavros served as the Las Vegas City Councilman serving the residents of Ward 4 from 2009 to 2022. He served as Mayor Pro Tem of Las Vegas from 2011 to 2015 and was again appointed to that position from 2020 to 2022. 

 

Before serving as a Las Vegas City Councilman, voters elected Stavros to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents in 2002. He was re-elected in 2006 and later became the Chairman of the Board.

 

Stavros has been a Las Vegas resident for 45 years. He previously served as a Captain with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (Metro), where he led an accomplished career of nearly 30 years in law enforcement. 

 

Lieutenant Governor Anthony graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1980. In 1987, he graduated with a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), and in 1999 he received his Ph.D. in Sociology from UNLV. Stavros has also attended the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

 

Additionally, Stavros served on the board of directors for Goodwill of Southern Nevada and as a member of the National League of Cities Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Advocacy Committee.  In 2012, he was appointed by Governor Sandoval to the Nevada Commission on Aging, and in 2014, he was appointed to the Board of Commissioners for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Later, in 2015, the Las Vegas City Council appointed Stavros to the Board of Directors for the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities.



Stavros is also a past member and president of the Board of Directors for St. John Greek Orthodox Church.  He received an Exemplary Service Award from Metro Police in 2006 and received an Award of Excellence in 2002 from the Community College of Southern Nevada where he was an adjunct faculty member.

Married for 45 years, the Anthonys have two daughters who are both graduates of the University of Nevada Reno.  Stavros enjoys golfing in his free time and playing with his grandchildren.
